Ice-Lined Refrigerator Holdover: How to Evaluate a 72-Hour Rating

A refrigerator advertised with a 72-hour holdover rating may look like a straightforward answer to a weekend power cut. The purchasing question is more specific: what conditions produced that number, and how does your facility know when to act?

For pharmacies and clinics, a holdover rating is equipment-selection information—not permission to leave vaccines unattended for a fixed number of hours. This guide explains how to read the claim and build a more useful quotation review.

What does refrigerator holdover mean?

The World Health Organization’s current glossary defines holdover around the time that all points in the vaccine compartment remain between +2°C and +8°C after a stabilized appliance loses power, at the applicable rated ambient temperature, with no other power source actively cooling it.

That is different from WHO’s “independence” measure, which can include active cooling from an integrated internal power source. When comparing brochures, check that the figures describe the same kind of performance. Do not compare an alarm-battery runtime with a passive thermal holdover figure.

Ice lining stores cooling—not electricity

WHO describes ice-lined refrigeration as using an internal ice or cold-water reserve to limit warming during a power interruption. Once electrical power returns, the compressor restores that reserve. This is a different function from a generator or compatible UPS supplying electrical power to refrigeration equipment.

A battery that supports only an alarm, controller or logger does not power the compressor. For any backup option, ask which parts remain operational and what evidence supports the stated duration. Monitoring continuity, thermal holdover and powered refrigeration are three separate checks.

Ask for the evidence behind the hour rating

WHO’s RF03-VP.5 testing protocol treats initial stabilization, holdover and door-opening performance as distinct tests. It calls for temperature and power graphs in the holdover report. That is a useful example of why a single number is less informative than the conditions and measurements behind it.

Questions to resolve before relying on a holdover claim
Evidence to request Question for the supplier
Temperature endpoint What upper and lower limits were used, and were all designated storage positions assessed?
Room conditions At what ambient temperature was the holdover measurement made?
Starting condition How was the cabinet stabilized and its thermal reserve prepared?
Load and layout What simulated load, baskets and storage arrangement were used?
Access Was the lid kept closed? Is separate evidence available for expected access patterns?
Recovery What power availability and recovery period restore the reserve after an interruption?

Use the answers to identify gaps between the test and your workflow. If a condition is missing, ask for clarification rather than filling it in with an assumption.

A current example: Pharmacold YC-275EW

The Pharmacold YC-275EW ice-lined vaccine refrigerator was active and in stock at 360 Medical when checked on October 17, 2026. Its current Pharmacold specification sheet lists:

  • Chest-style cabinet with 275 L listed capacity and four baskets.
  • +2°C to +8°C temperature range.
  • 72-hour holdover rating.
  • An ambient-temperature entry of +10°C to +43°C.
  • Exterior dimensions of 49.02 × 30.51 × 37.95 inches, W × D × H.
  • 110 V / 60 Hz electrical supply.

The sheet does not provide the complete holdover test report, including the exact ambient, load and lid-opening conditions used to establish the 72-hour figure. It therefore does not establish 72-hour performance for every site or access pattern. The ambient entry alone should not be read as proof of that duration at every temperature in the stated range.

For a clinic evaluating thermal holdover, this model is an option to investigate—not a substitute for its outage procedure. Confirm usable basket capacity, lid clearance and the installation instructions before ordering. Listed litres are not a verified count of vaccine cartons your facility can store.

Plan for the second interruption, too

A power-restored message does not tell staff how much thermal reserve has recovered. WHO notes that an ice-lined refrigerator’s compressor must refreeze or re-cool the lining after power returns. Ask for model-specific recovery instructions and the power availability needed before assuming the full holdover rating is available again.

For example, a rural clinic assessing repeated outages should ask about the interval between interruptions, not simply the longest single interruption. An urban pharmacy should also consider whether its normal access pattern fits the documented conditions. These are planning scenarios, not predictions of this model’s performance.

Make the response plan independent of the marketing number

PHAC’s September 2026 national vaccine storage and handling guidelines emphasize jurisdictional procedures, monitoring, backup arrangements and urgent storage protocols when appropriate conditions cannot be assured.

Before relying on holdover, assign an after-hours responder, verify building access, arrange suitable alternate storage and define the notification and transfer steps with your immunization program. Keep temperature records during the event and recovery. Do not wait for a brochure’s hour count to expire before taking action. If a temperature excursion occurs, follow the applicable reporting and assessment process before using affected stock.

Do not deliberately interrupt power to a refrigerator containing vaccine to find its limit. Any performance assessment should be planned with qualified support and without putting clinical inventory at risk.

What to include in your quotation request

Provide your expected inventory, room conditions, access frequency, outage history, available backup power and alternate-storage arrangements. Ask the supplier to document the holdover evidence, installation requirements, recovery instructions and monitoring configuration for the exact model offered.
